Salerno is situated in a central location of the gulf, between the Amalfi Coast and the plain of the Sele. The first settlement dates back to Oscan period, was later inhabited by the Samnites and in 197 BC became a Roman colony under the name of Salernum. Its importance grew in the VIIIth century with the Longobard domination of Arechi II. As the seat of the Principality had a long period of splendor due to the presence of the Medical School of Salerno, the oldest medical institution in the West, which tradition says was founded by four masters: an Arab, a Jew, a Latin and a Greek. Between the Xth and the twelfth century the city enjoyed the most prosperous period in its history. The cultural and economic growth continued under the dominion of the Normans and the Swabians, to stop in the sixteenth century with the arrival of the Spanish, mainly because of the hegemony of Naples.

In 1800’s the first factories were built, mainly thanks to foreign investment, especially in Switzerland: in 1877 the territory were 21 textile factories with 10,000 workers. Salerno was then dubbed "the Manchester of the Two Sicilies".

In September 1943, was the scene of the landing of the Allies who entered the Tyrrhenian coast of the Italian peninsula and opened the way to advance towards Rome.

Today Salerno is a town in full demographic and cultural renaissance.

The heart of the city is the medieval quarter. The narrow of the city streets, today rich of shops, follow the form of medieval urban plan and conserve beautiful historical buildings and much of its religious architecture. The Duomo from XIth century is dedicated to St. Matteo and is the most important monument of the city, a masterpiece of Norman architecture. The vast porticoes has above its ancient columns an elegant loggia decorated with inlaid wood. An imposing Roman bell tower dominates the atrium.

On the inside two magnificent ambos are richly decorated with mosaics from the XVII and the XVIII century. There is also a baroque crypt from the 1600’s covered in polychromatic marbles. There are numerous tombs, the most important of which is the one of the Queen Margherita of Durazzo.

Looking up toward the hills you can see the imposing Arechi castle from which there is enchanting panorama.

The Verdi Theatre, inaugurated in 1872, is one of the most important opera theatre of Italy.
