Ancient fishing village, picturesquely situated on the steep slopes of the Mount Pertuso. Tradition attributes the founding of Positano to refugees from Paestum, who settled in this place where there was already a Benedictine abbey dating to the IXth century after escaping the fury of the Saracens. For a long time the inhabitants of Positano were subjected to the powers of the abbey, but once freed, they devoted soon to the navigation getting in contrast with the nearby Amalfi, until it became a fief in 1492.

Positano viewed from the sea appears as an attractive and colorful crib, with its colorful houses nestled in the lush vegetation and is for this reason called the "gem of the divine coast".

The walk through the narrow streets leading to the beach of Marina Grande allows you to enjoy a wonderful view of the coast. In the main square stands the church of S. Maria Assunta, founded in the XIIIth century, with its characteristic majolica dome, visible from every corner of the town. The interior is rich in mosaics, marble and paintings as the Crucifixion of Santafede Fabrizio, a table and the Byzantine reliquary of S. Vito. Near the church are the remains of a Roman villa, excavated by the Bourbons in 1858 and re-excavated since 2005.

Positano has always been a destination of celebrities’ from the world of the art, fashion and entertainment.

From Positano you can reach and visit the Lattari Mountains, Nocelle is the location that can be reached through a staircase of 1700 steps, from there starts the so called Path of the Gods, one of the most beautiful nature trail in the world with heartbreaking views over the coast.

The Myth of the Mermaids

A few miles away from the coast there are the three Li Galli islands, a tiny archipelago, that Strabo in the I century BC indicates as the home of the Sirens, mythical figures that attracted sailors with their enchanting singing, causing the wreck. Probably the myth served as a warning to sailors who had to pay attention to the treacherous coastline. On the island of Gallo Lungo is located a restored mansion made in 1927 by Le Corbusier, bought by Russian choreographer Leonide Massine and then by the dancer Rudolf Nureyev.
