Hour and Tickets

During the opening hours are held at liturgical functions. It is therefore possible to freely enter and visit the cathedral, respecting the celebrations underway. From 10h00 to 17h00 closed to the public.

You can access the Cathedral in the timetable of closing through the Cloister of Paradise, and / or the Museum of the cathedral for which there is an entry fee of € 3.00 per person.

How to arrive

By car : If you come from North, after the A2 Milan-Naples, take the A3 Napoli-Salerno highway and exit at Vietri sul Mare, then along State Road 163, to Amalfi. If you are coming from the South, continue on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria towards Naples, exit at Vietri sul Mare and take the SS 163. If you arrive from the east along the A16 Bari-Napoli, then the A3 Naples-Salerno, Vietri sul Mare up to, where to take the SS 163.

By pubblic transports: from the airport of Capodichino (Naples) on Alibus, the bus from 6:30 to 23:30, which leads to the train station, from where you can take the train to Salerno, or the naval stations of Piazza Municipio, to use the metro del Mare. (From 23 April to 29 May and from September 8 until the end of the service is available only a start, scheduled for 8:25 am, with a trip of about two hours. From May 30 to September 7, increase to three races, starting with two in the morning and early afternoon, and the cost of the ticket is 15 €). The ticket costs € 3 is and is valid for 90 minutes during which you can also use other means of underground service. Departures are every 30 minutes and the ticket can be purchased on board.

The most convenient solution is to get to Salerno Train Station. From here you can catch the SITA bus to get to Amalfi. If you would prefer to get to Naples, from Naples Central Station you come up to Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana rail line, from there, then leave the SITA bus to Amalfi.

The charming and picturesque town, famous tourist resort of Coast having the same name, is known worldwide for its beautiful scenery, architecture and its mild climate.

The "Coast of the Sirens" is the southern slope of the Sorrentine Peninsula to the north of the Gulf of Salerno. The landscape shows cliffs, coves and beautiful bays such as the Emerald Grotto, Conca dei Marini and Furore. The coastline is dotted with small villages with wonderful views and a lively nightlife, among them Amalfi is the foremost.

According to legend, Amalfi was founded in the IV century by the Romans on their way to Constantinople, and several Roman finds in the area suggest that the area was inhabited since imperial times.

Following the victory of Narses over the Goths, Amalfi became part of the Byzantine Dukedom, and was vainly besieged by the Lombards Arechi II. In 812 managed to expel the Saracens, but was later sacked by Sicard Duke of Benevento. On the death of Sicard however, the inhabitants were able to rebel and take back the territory. Over time the power of Amalfi grew up, and the first Sea Republic of Italy have been created there. The Republic reached its zenith in the XI century. It was a very rich town, having considerable tradings with the East of the Mediterranean from where imported perfumes, fabrics and spices and where they exported mainly wood. The period of decline was caused by the Normans who took possession of the city in 1039. Among sieges, riots and looting in 1398 became a fief of Wenceslas Severino then moved to Giordano Colonna and the family Orsini in 1438. With the Aragonese, in mid-fifteenth century, passed into the hands of the family Piccolomini, related to Ferdinand I.

Towers, walls, vaulted houses, ancient churches, chapels and convents, testify, with its rich medieval mercantile houses of the aristocracy, the historical past of Amalfi.
