Procida is the smallest of the Neapolitan islands and perhaps the least known. It is of volcanic origin, and was called in ancient Prochyta.

The rich vegetation enriched from the Mediterranean, the sea and the coastal rocks of Procida island are waiting to be discovered, ideal for those who want a quiet holiday, away from mass tourism.

The landing point for ferries coming from Naples and Pozzuoli is Marina Grande with its coloured houses lined up in an evocative image that has always fascinated the tourists.

The seaside village is dominated by tuff headland overlooking the sea on which stands the Castle, the area known as the Terra Murata, the heart of the island; this unusual quarter city, that encloses medieval houses with courtyards and gardens, churches, buildings and a castle, has remained more o less intact for three hundred years.

The most characteristic spot of the island of Procida is undoubtedly Marina Corricella with a choreography made of small colourful houses huddled one over the other, as in a picturesque crib.

The ideal place to spend a day at sea is Chiaiolella Marina, an ancient crater semi-circular inlet closed by the promontory of Santa Margherita Vecchia. The waterfront is the preferred promenade of the island. From here, by a long bridge to the island of Vivara, an oasis of the WWF protected, covered with olive groves and Mediterranean vegetation, a former hunting rabbits, now visited only with permission of the Municipality of Procida.

How to arrive

Starting from Naples you can either start with a ferry or hydrofoil from the port of Beverello or Mergellina.

From Pozzuoli, however, ran continuous ferries, boats and ferries provide a constant connection to the whole Phlegraean area with the island.

In all cases, the traveler enjoys a wonderful view over the Gulf of Naples dominated by Vesuvius, and bordered on one side of the Sorrento peninsula and the island of Capri and the other by the same Phlegraean coast.

Hydrofoils and ferries, finally, connect constantly until late in the evening Procida with the two main ports of Ischia: Ischia Porto and Ischia.

Procida is the smallest, least spectacular and most genuine of the Bay of Naples. The island has served as the set for numerous films, such as The “Postman” by Massimo Troisi, and some scenes in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” were shot on Corricella.
