The National Archaeological Museum in Naples is the most important museums in the world for classic archaeology. It hosts the extraordinary Farnesian collection of sculptures and other incredible objects like the mosaic of Alexander the Great, from the House of the Fauno in Pompeii as well as the silvers from the House of Menandro in Pompeii, the Blue Vase, probably from a tomb in Pompeii and a number of Roman frescos from the Vesuvian area.
Its origins date back to the XVIII century when Naples was one of the most praised cities in Italy, populated by artists and important intellectuals. In 1734, of Bourbon, Prince of Spain, was appointed King of Naples and he started to modernize his reign, transforming Naples in an important art centre.
Since Charles was a Farnese on his mother’s side, in 1728 major works started in order to build a great museum at Capodimonte capable of containing the Farnese collection at that time still located in Rome. At that time started also the excavations in Resina, where about 30 years earlier the prince of Eleboeuf had found the theatre of ancient Herculaneum; in 1748 the excavations started in Pompeii, and in 1750 the Royal House in Portici became the ‘Herculaneum Museum’, containing most of the enormous collection of archaeological findings from the Vesuvian sites. In this period Campania becomes one of the most important destinations of the ‘Grand Tour’ and without any doubt, one of the most active cultural centers in the world.
In 1767 there was the plan to transfer to a single museum in Naples containing both the Capodimonte collections and the extraordinary findings from Portici. Therefore in 1777 started the renovation of the Building of Studies at Naples in order to host the Royal Bourbon Museum. The project passed to Ferdinando Fuga and after his death it was continued by other architects. In 1787 Ferdinand IV, successor of Charles III in 1749, regardless of the protest from Vatican authorities, ordered the transfer of the famous collection of sculptures from Palazzo Farnese in Rome to Naples. This is the reason why extraordinary masterworks of the ancient art like the statues from the Caracalla’s Baths, the Farnese Hercules and the marble group called Farnese Bull, are today still exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. In 1822 the renovation of the building was finished, and a statue of King Ferdinand by Canova was placed in the main staircase in order to celebrate the Bourbon’s power. Successively, the museum collections have been enlarged thanks to finds from the Vesuvian ruins.
