The Solfatara, the mythical entrance to the Ancient Romans' Hell, is an inactive volcano, part of the volcanic region known as Phlegrean Fields. It is famous for its steaming jets of sulphurous vapor. Sulphur was extracted here in the past, and until 1800 it was a spa renowned for its mineral waters, natural saunas and mud.

There was no traveller of the 18th and 19th century who wouldn’t place the Solfatara among his excursions within the so called “Grand Tour”, educational travel for the young scions of the European noble families.

The Solfatara is the epicenter of the cyclic phenomenon of the rising and lowering of ground level in the Phlegrean Fields known as bradyseism.

During the visit to the volcano two phenomena can be observed which cause awe and amazement to the visitor: Condensation of vapor: one of the more dazzling phenomena of the Solfatara is that of

How to arrive

The Solfatara is about 10 km. from Naples.

By train Take the Metro (Underground) and get off at the Pozzuoli-Solfatara station which is about 800 metres from the entrance to the Volcano. You can come on foot or by city bus P9.

By bus The line 152 and Sepsa buses leave Piazza Garibaldi, downtown Naples, cross the city and reach the Solfatara.

By auto If you are coming from the Autostrada you must exit and, after the pay toll booth, take the entrance to the Tangenziale of Naples and  ride it all the way to exit n.11 of Agnano at about 4 Km. from the Solfatara, therefore follow the directions for Pozzuoli and the signs “Vulcano Solfatara”.

condensation of water vapor which is obtained placing a small flame close to the fumarole: the vapors appear gradually stronger since both the tiny solid particles produced through combustion as well as the ions of the atmospheric gas close to the flame behave from condensation nuclei of the vapor itself. The rumble of the ground: Another shocking phenomenon is that caused by a rock, which, left to fall to the ground from a small height, in certain points of the crater, causes a dull rumble which gives the feeling of the presence of large underground cavities. Actually, they are only micro cavities produced from the gas of the fumaroles in a ground of its nature pretty porous. The main tourist attractions are: the mud pit, the Large Mouth (that is the main fumarole), the mineral water Well and the old Saunas (natural saunas.
